Central Highlands and Volcanoes
The capital, San Jose, is set in the Central Valley and while no great shakes itself the surrounding region has so much to offer including coffee plantations, cloud & rainforests, rivers for rafting and volcanoes. The Monteverde Cloudforest to the north is world famous and exploring the trails and enjoying the activities a must for visitors – you might even get a glimpse of the national bird, the resplendent quetzal. Arenal volcano, with its classic outline, is a hub of activity with hot springs and boat rides in addition to canopy walkways.
Pick your coast – Caribbean or Pacific
The Caribbean Coast is ethnically diverse with some lovely beaches however the highlight is Tortuguero National Park, only accessible by boat or plane. July to October sees the Green Turtles laying their eggs however at any time of year explore the canals, swamps and waterways to see the wide variety of bird and wildlife. The Pacific Coast is best known for its beaches and surf but there are also fine National Parks and the spectacularly diverse Osa Peninsula in the far south.

There is white-water rafting of all grades and river floating plus it is one of the best known surf destinations, particularly on the Pacific Coast. In the rainforest there are choice of canopy walks, sky-trams and zip-wires. Hike up an active volcano or join an expert for a rainforest walk to find out more about the diverse flora and fauna. There’s mountain biking routes or you can take it easier with a visit to a coffee or chocolate plantation!
Costa Rica is the perfect introduction to Latin America for families as one of the continent’s easiest and safest options.
