Good news for Tigers – Nepal

There was really good news from Nepal recently on the wildlife front. A recent government survey showed that the number of wild tigers living in Nepal increased by 63% since 2009 – from 121to 198. Allowing for margins of error this means a likely population of 163 to 235.

Particularly good growth in numbers (18 to 50) was found in Bardia National Park in the south-west lowland Terai. This park is now firmly back on the visitors radar having pretty much out of bounds for many years due to access problems and the Maoist insurrection.  As well as Tiger the park is well known for Elephant, Rhino and the extremely rare Gangetic River Dolphin.

Holidays to Nepal can be much more than just walking or trekking and wildlife tours are one of its strongest suits. Wildlife visits can be organised as the predominant part of a holiday – with Bardia, Chitwan National Park and, perhaps, the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve for birds as the main features. It is however also easy to add on wildlife sections at the end of a walking tour or cultural holiday with easy access to Chitwan from Kathmandu.
